New York is progressing towards passing a law that would restrict social media platforms from using algorithms to promote content to minors. The legislation would require platforms like TikTok and Meta’s Instagram to display content in chronological order by default for young users. Parents would need to give consent for algorithmically generated content feeds. The proposed regulations also include measures to protect children’s privacy by limiting the collection and sharing of personal data without consent. The legislation would also grant parents more control over their children’s social media use and app notifications. State lawmakers could vote on the bills soon.
